I have a 'pin thang today . Some help , please .

A Captured Muse of a Terrapin . Everyone being played quite well, and loving it .

Let's dial up crisp , clean sound ( a tad bright even ) .

My eldest will not thank - you as I play all your recs . He hates this song . Actually , all of it , as in GD . Where did we go wrong ? :(

Thank - you everyone ,

you horde of superstitious barbarians , invariably friendly and usually silly , worshipers of music and moonlight , keeping your primitive calenders by counting nights instead of days , roaming like wolves through the fog and gloaming .

Are you familiar with this recording?

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1977-06-04.fob.menke.motb-0096.97183.flac16

The terrapin is good (I personally find them all to be essentially the same), but it's what comes after it that really makes the show.

Your post reminded me of the Holy Grail rant.

Soldier: 'Allo! 'Oo is it?
Arthur: It is I, King Arthur, and these are my knights of the Round Table.
Whose castle is this?
S: This is the castle of my master, Guy de Lombard.
A: Go and tell your master that we have been charged by God with a sacred
quest. If he will give us food and shelter for the night, he can join us
in our quest for the Holy Grail.
S: Well, I'll ask 'im, but I don't think 'e'll be very keen-- 'e's already got
one, you see?
A: What?
Lancelot: He says they've already *got* one!
A: (confused) Are you *sure* he's got one?
S: Oh yes, it's ver' naahs.
(to the other soldiers:) I told 'em we've already *got* one!
(they snicker)
A: (taken a bit off balance) Well... ah, um... Can we come up and have a look?
S: Of course not! You are English types.
A: Well, what are you then?
S: (Indignant) Ah'm French! Why do you think I have this out-rrrageous
accent, you silly king?!
Galahad: What are you doing in *England*?
S: Mind your own business!
A: If you will not show us the Grail, we shall take your castle by force!
S: You don't frighten us, English pig-dogs! Go and boil your bottoms, son of a
silly person! Ah blow my nose at you, so-called "Arthur Keeeng"! You and
all your silly English Knnnnnnnn-ighuts!!!

(the soldier proceeds to bang on his helmet with his hands and stick out his
tongue at the knights, making strange noises.)

Galahad: What a strange person.
A: (getting mad) Now look here, my good ma--
S: Ah don' wanna talk to you no more, you empty-headed animal food-trough
wiper! Ah fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster, and
your father smelt of elderberries!
Galahad: Is there someone else up there we can talk to?
S: No!! Now go away, or I shall taunt you a second time!

And to answer your original question try out this Terrapin:

The Whistle is Screaming, my mind is gleaning to get to...

Here's a Tom Terrific 'rippin Yea, even TayRIPPIN' Terrapin from the 2nd night of Hampton 1984 (4/14/84) from http://www.archive.org/details/gd1984-04-14.neumann-u87.eaton.miller.90595.sbeok.flac16 OR http://www.archive.org/details/gd1984-04-14.sbd.walker.scotton.miller.105836.flac16

This is, to me, is a truly gritty, down-&-dirty version Even compared to the '86 Hampton third night Uncle John's Band-> Terrapin Station-> Playin' In The Band in the trio of short-shorts-hoes.

Hampton 1984-my first visit to the the Honeycomb Hideout & Edgar Cayce's A.R.E. in Va. Beach & 2 shows IMHO worth of matricizing (matrix-izing). & It was a Friday the 13th weekend on top of everything else...YeeHaw....

Hmm, Just realized that my fav Terrapins were a)springtime, b)Hampton, c)pre-coma w/Brent ("gimme Clif Hanger over Cliff Hucker" I always say).

BTW, I was front row Charlotte '89 2nd night & saw a great version that is likely more palatable to the non-DH. See Mr. Seamons' excellent matrix http://www.archive.org/details/gd1989-10-23.mtx.seamons.102771.sbeok.flac16. The last Terrapinated show that I'll mention is Deer Creek 1990-07-18 (http://www.archive.org/details/gd1990-07-18.sbd.miller.95807.sbeok.flac16): at 20 min, the length may intimidate all but the most intrepid of the 'not us.'

Pardon the Ramblin'- maybe you just had to be there to go there!

Terrapin was one of the first GD songs I ever heard... it was the studio version and it was unlike anything I'd ever heard before. What was this music? Folk? Rock and Roll? The lyrics are so mystical and shamanic... and then the jams... and the grandiosity of the string arrangement... Wow... the studio Uncle John's Band and Shakedown Street were also introduced to me by a high school friend of mine when I first sampled the luscious cannabis smoke :) 3 years later I found the Archive and I never looked back hahahahahaa weeeeeeeeeeee

Your eldest does not stand alone in his estimation of Terrapin. Indeed such luminaries as WT, SDH, and your 'umble scribe stand alongside him. Witness:

Just in case you didn't scroll "up", here are some more tidbits to really impress upon you the "problem" with this tune.

We did go on, didn't we?

Did you catch the ref to Dan Brown in that???

Ha! After the "who do you write like" post I found that ironic in the extreme...

Here's a few that come to mind... that '84 Hampton Terrapin is really something though! Though there may be a whole bunch of cranky old farts around here that don't like this tune, I tend to find it a wholly satisfying journey to the Now. Especially if Jerry doesn't miss the lyrics and those ending jams just got more intense through the early 80s... that Hampton 84 is a great example.

As a rare encore!

This one's got an unusually spacey jam at the end:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd84-10-08.sbd.wiley.14450.sbeok.shnf

His job is to shed light and not to master.

These 3 turtles have done "it" for me of late:

3/18/77 Winterland (with the At a Siding/L'Alhambra sequence)
6/9/77 Winterland (right out of St. Stephen's closing question)
3/24/90 Knickerbocker (say what you will about Dozin', but this Terrapin>Mind Left Body is top notch)

ice9 ( I hope not ) , I had the privilege of being at this run . The MLBJ can bring tears of joy to your eyes . I do not know if you have listened to the first set , but it cooks ( except the last two songs )

This was one of the best shows I ever saw .
